Jean Booker

Teacher and Tutor

Bio

I was the first and only member of my family to attend and graduate from college. While in college, I met my husband. He and his group of friends shared Christ’s love and grace with me, and it was not long before I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior. I began college with the hopes of being a high school math teacher, but as my relationship with the Lord grew, he closed that door and opened another. I went to work for a telecommunications company teaching a proprietary database system to new hires and writing teaching materials for employees. Seven years later, the Lord closed that door and opened the door to motherhood and homeschooling. During my years of homeschooling, I learned to adapt my teaching style to my children’s ever changing day-to-day strengths. I have become a very patient teacher, and I believe that every student has the ability to learn if we can tap into their strengths and help them overcome their weaknesses. My educational strengths have always been math and science, and I would be honored to share my passion of these subjects with your student. It has been my experience that the Lord uses my enthusiasm for these subjects to motivate students to enjoy learning these subjects as well.

Texas Woman’s University 1988-1992

Magna Cum Laude

Major: Mathematics

Minor: Computer Science

What sets my classes apart from others:

My classes all include textbooks and solutions.

My classes are offered 2 days per week for 3 hours per week.

My science classes all include homework videos for guided practice.

I am available for one-on-one on-line tutoring upon request.

Chemistry - Apologia

Apologia Chemistry is an introductory high school Chemistry course. The class includes an introduction to lab techniques using safe household chemicals and basic lab equipment. Apologia Chemistry is appropriate for the average student as well as the gifted student. This course can serve as both a launching pad into AP Chemistry or as a basic high school course. Since common household chemicals are used, a better understanding of everyday chemical relationships is gained. Topics include significant figures, units, classification, the mole concept, stoichiometry, thermochemistry, thermodynamics, kinetics, acid and base reactions, redox reactions, mixtures and solutions, atomic structure, Lewis structures, molecular geometry, gas laws, equilibrium, and redox reactions.

Prerequisites: In preparation for this class the student should have completed Saxon Algebra I or an equivalent. Much time will be spent in class reinforcing and making applications of the math previously learned, but the student should be comfortable with the use of equations and finding unknown values.

The textbook and all solutions are provided for this class. Homework videos provided for guided practice. Students will need a scientific calculator preferably TI-83 or TI-84.

Physics - Apologia

Physics is not hard - it's just different! Most students spend years in math classes asking, “What am I going to use this for.” Physics answers this question. I like to think of Physics as an applied math class. We take all of those math skills and put them to use solving real world problems.

Apologia Physics provides an introduction to basic high school physics concepts.

The topics covered include: one and two dimensional motion, Newton's Laws and applications, uniform circular motion, gravity, work and energy, momentum, periodic motion, waves, optics, electrostatics, electrodynamics, electrical circuits, and magnetism.

Prerequisites: Completion of Algebra II is preferred, but completion of a course with basic trigonometry is usually sufficient. Much time will be spent in class reinforcing and making applications of the math previously learned, but the student should be comfortable with the use of equations and finding unknown values

The textbook and all solutions are provided for this class. Homework videos provided for guided practice. Students will need a scientific graphing calculator preferably TI-84.

Calculus - Saxon with AP Prep

Calculus is simply a study of change and how other things are affected by that change. The text starts with a strong review of Advanced Math (Precalculus) and Trigonometry and then gradually introduces the concepts of a first semester Calculus course.

This is a two-semester course which covers most of the calculus taught in the first semester of college/university Calculus 1 class. Saxon Calculus “recognizes that an understanding of the abstractions of calculus does not occur on the initial encounter, no matter how brilliant the presentation. Thus the book uses an incremental development….” This class will include preparation for the Calculus AB AP exam.

Topics include: Limits and Continuity, Differentiation (implicit and explicit), Graphs of functions and derivatives, Applications of derivatives, Integration, Definite and indefinite integrals, Areas and Volumes using integration, and slope fields.

The textbook and all solutions are provided for this class. Students will need a scientific graphing calculator preferably TI-84.

Former Student Comments

“You have truly been an inspiration to love learning science and math.

I really appreciate what you have done to help me succeed!”

“You clearly explain the concepts and work through the problems in a way that makes the work seem easier!”

“To be honest, at the beginning of the year I was absolutely positive that I hated Physics, but then I actually discovered a love for it that I never knew I had! Crazy! Anyways, thank you for giving me a passion for science and math that I never knew I had.”

“I was slightly nervous going into this class because of the experience I had in my middle school chemistry/physics class. But I have loved every single physics class of yours and I appreciate the joy that you have for teaching.”
